Botswana’s wildlife guarantees a superb safari experience!

On your Meerkats & the Okavango Delta safari you’ll explore two of Botswana’s most fascinating landscapes, from one of the world’s largest saltpans to meandering waterways and lily-covered lagoons. Both of these incredible landscapes are teeming with animal and bird life. A sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe is a fitting end to your amazing African safari.

This exclusive Meerkats & the Okavango Delta safari is a conservation and community-focused safari. It’s an incredible opportunity for you to not only experience Botswana’s amazing wildlife and scenery but also to see the significant difference and impact your stay can have on wildlife conservation and the lives of the people living in wildlife areas. You’ll have the opportunity for behind-the-scenes visits to some of these projects and talk to the people involved.

Makgadikgadi Salt Pans

The first stop on your Meerkats & the Okavango Delta safari are the vast Makgadikgadi Salt Pans. Surrounded by the Kalahari Desert they are the remnants of the once great Lake Makgadikgadi. The lunar-like landscape is inhabited by unique, desert-adapted species that you’ll discover on game drives and a guided walk with Zu’/hoasi bushmen. Out on the Pans, you’ll get up close and personal with the coolest residents of the desert, a habituated group of the Kalahari meerkats. They often use visitors as convenient lookout posts – always a highlight with our groups!

Okavango Delta

The Okavango Delta is where the wild things are and Botswana’s wildlife won’t disappoint! You’ll explore two different parts of the Delta, staying in very comfortable tented camps with ensuite facilities. Imagine a hotel room with canvas walls!  Explore this magnificent wetland on the water by boat or traditional mokoro and on land in open 4×4 safari vehicles.

During your stay in the Delta, you’ll visit a nearby village to see first-hand the community work that is being done there and plant a tree at the primary school. In the evening you’ll learn how the lodge works hand-in-hand with the local community and how the ranger team monitors wildlife and works closely with the Botswana Defence Force (BDF) on antipoaching.

You’ll learn about the two Elephant Express buses transporting children to school, and older community members to the clinic, ensuring they don’t need to walk along the dangerous ‘elephant highways’. The community-led “Life With Elephants” team will tell you about their traditional way of life in close proximity to elephants. A representative from CLAWS will take you out to visit the cattle kraal or the herd of cattle in the bush, where you will get to see how their work is related to the community and lion conservation.

Victoria Falls

Victoria Falls is a UNESCO world heritage site and a natural world wonder. The 1.7km wide curtain of water forms a natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia. You’ll spend one last night here, with the option to add on a few more days to enjoy this vibrant small town and its many activities.

This Signature Safari will be personally escorted from Maun, Botswana, by company founder and director Karen Platzer for a group of 4 or more participants. For a group smaller than 4 people the tour will be guided by qualified local guides.

This outstanding safari is limited to just 8 guests – don’t miss your adventure of a lifetime!

Combination: Your Meerkats & the Okavango Delta safari can be combined with our Zimbabwe & Victoria Falls safari.

1 MayMaun, Botswana

This intimate and comfortable lodge bordering the Thamalakane River on the outskirts of Maun was recently refurbished and opened its tent-flaps again in March 2022. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a long flight. Anyone with a soft spot for giraffes (like me!) will be over the moon at the opportunity to get up close with the resident giraffe herd. There are 20 in total and the team of naturalists will show you how they can be identified by their spots!

2 - 4 MayMkagadikadi Salt Pans

Enjoy game drives or quad bike adventures across the otherworldly salt pans, and a walk with the Zu’/hoasi bushmen to discover the amazing creatures that somehow manage to survive (and thrive) in this harsh environment. The ‘’Kalahari cool cats,’’ the habituated meerkat family who like nothing more than to use unsuspecting guests as lookout points are always a highlight for my guests.

5 - 10 MayOkavango Delta

You’ll experience 3 nights each in two different areas in the eastern and northern Okavango Delta. Enjoy incredible game viewing on land and water, and learn about conservation and community projects supported by our camps.

Spend your last night in our camp ‘chill pit’, a sunken lounge area overlooking the lagoon, watching the wildlife comings and goings. And as the sun sets and the moon rises, you’ll feel relaxed and inspired by all the life-changing safari experiences you’ve had the opportunity to see and do.

11 MayVictoria Falls, Zimbabwe

Today you’ll cross the border to Zimbabwe for a night at Victoria Falls, where your fabulous safari ends with a sunset cruise on the Zambezi River.

I recommend adding a few extra days here to visit the Falls at leisure, maybe walk across the Victoria Falls Bridge, do some last-minute shopping, and enjoy all this vibrant small town has to offer.

12 MayDeparture

After breakfast transfer to Victoria Falls International Airport to join your flight home, or join Karen on her superb Zimbabwe safari.

Solo Traveller

Having received newsletters for some years the decision was made to do the Botswana Safari. The trip notes and itinerary indicated an interesting holiday. What we got was an amazing, not to be missed, experience. The organisation was seamless, the camps, food, knowledgeable Guides and the opportunity to see, close up, a huge range of wildlife and birds. It was a photographers paradise and such a great experience that a Kenya Safari is booked.
