Escape the crowds in remote southern Tanzania.
On this exclusive African Encounters safari you’ll get off the beaten track in remote southern Tanzania – a peaceful oasis well away from the busy Northern Circuit.
Your dream safari starts with two nights in a stunning luxury tented camp on the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Our camp is located on the northwestern edge of the Crater rim, well away from any other lodge. Here you’ll descend into the Crater with its abundant wildlife and imposing landscapes, take short walks on the Crater rim and visit to an authentic Maasai village to learn about the culture and traditions of the Maasai people.
Then it’s time to get off the beaten track in southern Tanzania where you’ll enjoy guided walks, day and night game drives, boating and fishing in Ruaha National Park and Selous Game Reserve.
Tanzania’s vast southern areas are remote, wild and beautiful. Unlike the popular north, relatively few people venture this far. And yet these superb parks boast some of the richest wildlife in East Africa. Venture off the beaten track for a real wildlife adventure. And after an exciting day game-viewing relax back at camp with a drink around the campfire. Our charming camp on a dry river bed in Ruaha National Park and our beautiful private lodge on the banks of the Rufiji River in Selous Game Reserve both offer superb comfort and relaxation.
Finish your amazing safari with a few relaxing days on exotic Zanzibar Island in the Indian Ocean.
Karen Platzer, your African Encounters tour director, has used her 30 years of experience in Africa to plan a safari that is truly beyond your expectations. Karen will be taking just 8 participants on this exclusive ‘safari in comfort’.
Starts: Arusha, Tanzania
Ends: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Pre-tour option: Ask us about spending a few days in Serengeti National Park before you join the group in Arusha.
Early bookings are essential – these small camps fill very quickly!
19 August: Independent arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, Arusha, where you’ll be met and transferred to your accommodation on a coffee plantation.
20 – 21 August: Road transfer to your stunning accommodation on the Ngorongoro Crater rim for two nights. Your camp is located in a truly spectacular site on a quiet & unobtrusive section of the Crater rim. You will spend a day down in the spectacular Ngorongoro Crater, one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and enjoy short walks and a visit to an authentic Maasai village.
22 – 24 August: Fly to Ruaha National Park where your camp offers its guests a unique and comfortable tented safari experience. The main dining area overlooks the riverbed and has two large and comfortable seating areas where you can relax with an afternoon drink and watch the wildlife in the dry riverbed. Ruaha is known not only for its rugged and magnificent landscapes or its remoteness and wild immensity but also its spectacular concentrations of game. Large herds of elephant and buffalo are a common sighting and lion and leopard are abundant.
25 – 27 August: Fly to Selous Game Reserve in southern Tanzania and transfer to your private lodge overlooking the Rufiji River for 3 nights. Game drives in open-sided 4×4 vehicles allow awesome wildlife viewing. The same goes for the boats: just being on the river – never mind the game – is a fantastic contrast to time spent in a vehicle. Drifting silently downstream, watching the river banks unfold, is hard to beat.
28 August: Transfer back to the airport for your flight back to Zanzibar and drive across the island to your beach resort.
29 – 31 August: Three days to relax and your beautiful resort. Optional activities include visiting historic Stone Town, a Spice Tour or a bush walk to see rare Red Colobus monkeys, found only on Zanzibar.
01 September: Fly to Dar es Salaam to join your international flight.
