If you’re ready to jump on a plane again, here’s why Africa should be high on your list for safe post-pandemic travel…
The travel industry was one of the first casualties of the Covid-19 pandemic, but after almost 3 years of isolation, things are finally starting to look up. Borders are open, PCR tests and quarantine are no longer required for vaccinated travellers – it’s time to explore the world again!
But, while we’re keen to travel again, we’re not throwing caution to the wind and our health is still a top priority. Africa has fared relatively well during Covid-19 and this UNICEF report highlights 5 reasons why. This interactive map published by John Hopkins University in July 2022 shows why an African safari is a much safer post-Covid travel choice than most other destinations.
The great outdoors
Science has shown it is harder to spread Covid-19 in an outdoor environment compared to a museum or indoor event. By definition, safaris are open-air experiences far away from crowded areas and bustling cities. On safari, you spend most of your time out in the fresh air, at one with nature and wildlife. You experience game drives in open safari vehicles, explore vast open landscapes with your guide, and dine outdoors under a shady tree or a canopy of stars – all perfect for post-pandemic travel!
Social distancing
Social distancing is easy on safari. If you’re staying in a luxury tented camp your tent is well spaced from your fellow travellers, and the number of guests in a safari vehicle is limited. Instead of the traditional communal dining, camps and lodges offer separate tables for each group of guests, so keeping your distance during post-pandemic travel isn’t difficult. And while we no longer shake hands or hug, and the welcoming smiles of your guides and camp staff may be hidden behind masks, the warmth and enthusiasm of your hosts will still shine through!
Safety protocols for post-pandemic travel are in place
It’s reassuring to know that all camps and lodges have strict protocols in place. Throughout East and Southern Africa, people working in the travel industry are classed as essential workers. More than 95% of staff working in safari camps and lodges are vaccinated and all are regularly tested. Most safari camps and lodges are well away from populated areas and staff are rostered on for several weeks at a time, which greatly reduces the risk of transmission.
Hand washing facilities and sanitiser are widely available for guests and staff. All surfaces are regularly sanitised in the camps and lodges as well as safari vehicles. Airports, hotels, and public spaces are sanitised, and strict check-in rules and regulations ensure you can enjoy a safe holiday.
The safest option for post-Covid travel is a private safari!
A private safari with family and friends is undoubtedly one of the safest holidays you can take. By staying in small luxury camps, the only people your private group will have contact with are staff who have spent the past few weeks isolated in the wilderness. Creating a private safari is one of my favourite things! Whether it’s a multi-generational adventure to celebrate a special birthday or anniversary or the trip of a lifetime for a group of friends, get in touch and let’s start planning the safari you’ve been dreaming of!
The pandemic was a clear reminder of how fragile life can be. Some of us might not want to keep putting off that bucket list trip anymore, because we’ve all had a stark reminder that we’re never promised tomorrow. There’s no better time to finally go on that adventure you have always dreamed of.
