Depending on which airline you are flying with the carry-on hand luggage restrictions may differ so always check the airline’s web site for their luggage allowance. Most airlines allow one carry on bag plus one handbag or laptop bag. Airlines are tightening up on weight and size restrictions these days, and there’s nothing worse than having to repack at check-in!
So what should you pack in your hand luggage?
- Travel documents – passport, airline tickets, itinerary and hotel vouchers. It always amazes me how many people don’t know the name of their destination hotel, and you’ll probably need it to complete your arrival form at the airport.
- Your liquids and gels (less than 100 mls) in a clear plastic bag to show at security.
- Reading glasses (and sunglasses for when you arrive). A hard-shell case provides more protection when travelling.
- A jacket, scarf or pashmina for when the cabin temperature is too cold, which it frequently is.
- A good book or Kindle to read or maybe brain teaser and crossword puzzles – not all flights provide onboard entertainment or the system may break down.
- An empty water bottle. Often you can fill it after security and before you board your flight, but if there is an additional security check before boarding, as in Bali, cabin crew will fill it for you once you are onboard.
- Valuables – your electronics, jewellery, cash, bank cards and travel documents aren’t insured if they’re packed in your checked luggage.
- Mobile phones, iPads and laptops are fragile and won’t handle rough treatment by baggage handlers well. Pack them in your hand luggage or a laptop bag which is part of your carry on allowance, and don’t forget the chargers in case your main luggage goes missing.
- Essential medication, both for your flight and your holiday in case of missing luggage again.
- Power packs and batteries. These must not be packed in your checked-in luggage or they will be confiscated by security.
And what shouldn’t go in your cabin luggage?
- Any liquids and gels over 100 mls.
- Dangerous goods. I remember seeing a collection point at Amsterdam airport which contained not only knives but also guns and swords. Just amazing what people want to take on board! Gases, flammable liquids, toxic substances and magnetic products are also prohibited in hand luggage.
- Pocket knives, metal nail files and tweezers must be packed in your checked-in luggage.
